Teen romance got a bad rap from all the fawning and distant gazing in the Twilight saga.
Dern brings deep care, concern and everyday gratitude to Hazel's mother Frannie, while Dafoe digs his heels in to put the 'grunt' in disgruntled as Van Houten. While their names carry much weight, they're not there to boost the cast's credibility as much as they're there to support two fantastic performances. Woodley and Elgort are not starved of supporting actors, thanks to the experienced Laura Dern and Willem Dafoe. The heart and humour give it a surprising sense of maturity that you wouldn't ordinarily associate with a young adult novel. While there are some parallels with A Walk to Remember, Boone's romance drama has a similar tone to 50/50, a cancer comedy drama starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The star-crossed love story seems like something from a Nicholas Sparks novel, yet it was actually inspired by the true story of Esther Grace Earl. Their budding "Romeo & Juliet" romance is what drives The Fault in Our Stars, a title derived from a quote in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Together Woodley and Elgort are just wonderful, delivering very real and tender performances with a chemistry that lights up the screen. Woodley plays opposite Ansel Elgort, or Caleb from Divergent, whose charming down-to-earth performance will undoubtedly make him a strong contender going forward. While not entirely convinced she was right for the part at first, her audition was powerful enough to leave the author John Green and director Josh Boone in tears. so passionate that she wrote a number of heartfelt letters urging the film-makers to cast her.
It's a role that she was really passionate about. She plays the lead role of Hazel in The Fault in Our Stars. Woodley is the perfect girl next door, unassumingly beautiful yet ordinary enough to be just about anyone her age. She's fast becoming hot property in Hollywood after a string a strong performances. Shailene Woodley, best known for Divergent and The Spectacular Now, is a star on the rise. While at first opposites, Hazel and Gus soon start to realise there's much more to their newfound friendship. He's a charming go-getter and while denied an all-star basketball career, it seems nothing is going to get him down.
While not entirely convinced of the need to share, she inadvertently locks eyes with the confident new guy, Gus. While permanently harnessed to an oxygen tank, she's trying to live life like her days are numbered, humouring her parents by attending a support group. The story follows Hazel, a sixteen year old cancer patient, whose parents force her to attend a support group where she meets and falls in love with Gus, an amputee and former basketball player. The Fault in our Stars is based on the young adult novel and New York Times bestseller by John Green.
